Adoptive parents need to understand that parenting a child who has experienced trauma requires an awareness that the past trauma(s) may impact how a child acts and reacts. Reaching out for support from professionals, friends, and family are helpful, as well as learning about trauma and trauma informed parenting. Knowing that “typical’” or “usual “parenting strategies may not work for a child who has experienced trauma. Learning trauma-informed parenting strategies can be very helpful.
